Why choose Bowen?

We live in a world inundated with choice. Walk down any grocery store aisle and this point is clearly in evidence. There’s a whole aisle dedicated to breakfast cereals. And another to beverages. And another to snack food options. When looking for a breakfast cereal that is right for you, for example, how do you choose among the dozens on offer? (Not that I’m comparing Bowen to breakfast cereals.) Are you swayed by the packaging? Or content? Perhaps by price? Do words like ‘whole grain’, ‘low sugar’, ‘nutritious’ or ‘delicious’ have you grabbing for one product over another? Are you a consumer based on ingredients and nutritional panels? Or do you choose the one that makes your body feel the best?

Finding the right healing modality for your body can be a bit like choosing the right cereal. There’s a lot to consider and many different choices available today. It can be, in a word, overwhelming.

I have tried a lot of different therapies over the years and I believe they all have a place as healing techniques. But one definitely makes my body feel better, especially in the longer term, than others. And that therapy? Bowen.

Here are my top 5 reasons why Bowen should be the go-to therapy of choice:

  1. It’s wholistic. It treats the entire body. It works on the central and autonomic nervous systems. The moves activate the connective tissue, (the fascia), and take the impulses generated by the move to where they need to go in the body to facilitate healing on all levels. Healing begins immediately. Bowen is unlike any other therapy I know of in its ability to shift the body from flight/flight to rest/digest in a matter of minutes. It’s freaky like that.
  2. Bowen treats the cause as well as the symptoms. People usually try Bowen because they are having issues in their body. They are experiencing pain and discomfort in at least one area and often multiple sites. Bowen can address the symptoms, leaving a client feeling better after a treatment, but because of the wholistic nature of Bowen, the moves are also addressing the cause. Often a chronic condition will resolve after a series of Bowen sessions because not only are the symptoms improved, the Bowen has actually helped to address and correct the problem causing the symptoms.
  3. Bowen offers much more than just pain relief. Bowen is fantastic for pain but it’s also a wonderful modality for health, maintenance and well-being. It is gaining a lot of notice in sports as a technique which not only helps with sports-related injuries but also as a pre and post game treatment to optimise and improve performance. It is one of the best therapies for stress and anxiety due to its ability to shift the body from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system. It is also a good technique for balancing the hormonal system as well as resolving digestive complaints. So, yes, it works well on pain but it also works to balance the body so it can perform and function optimally.
  4. Bowen is suitable for almost all people and their issues. Because it is so gentle and effective, it is the perfect modality for babies, children, adults and the elderly. There are few contraindications and this is partly because it works with the body’s innate healing ability and also because it uses the moves of Bowen how and where they are needed most. The body will only take in what it can use. While training, we learn early on that ‘every body is better with Bowen’ and I see this to be true, time after time.
  5. It’s gentle, effective and non-invasive. And non-manipulative. The beauty of this is that the body is working to correct itself without the inputs ‘manipulating’ it into how it ‘should’ be. We create and hold patterns for a reason. Bowen moves allow the body to let go of patterns, and therefore move towards healing, in a gentle and non-aggressive way, at the body’s own pace. While relief may be felt immediately, or soon after a treatment, often it can take a bit longer for the body to unwind. But usually once it does, the effects are more long lasting, if not permanent.
